I have an old (not that we are old) high school friend who is currently fighting cancer. Watching her posts on facebook and seeing how strong she is, made me want to do something. Show the world that even when you are fighting everyday with chemo and the emotional toll it has on you, you are still the same beautiful person and always will be.

Since I could not do this for my friend, I posted a little note about it on my facebook page. I said wanted to photograph and tell the story of a woman fighting cancer and show that even with chemo and all it does to your body while it fights the cancer you are still beautiful. Cancer doesn't define who you are, how you fight does.

With that said above........ I had the honor to meet Kori last week. Here is her story:

My husband I and had just been married the August before I got diagnosed in December and had been planning to have a family. When I started to get a sharp pain in my stomach I thought I had appendicitis and all the doctors I spoke to thought I had a large cyst, no one thought I had cancer as a healthy 27 year old. I scheduled a surgery for mid December to remove the large 'cyst' and my husband and I vowed to start our family after my recovery. The morning I came out of surgery I knew something was not right; I finally asked the first team of doctors I saw the and was informed that I had stage three ovarian cancer and I would need to have a second surgery to have a full hysterectomy and potentially remove part of my colon. I don't remember my first thought but what I do remember are the feelings. I had a feeling of grief, literal heartache, and complete devastation knowing that my husband and I would not be able to have our own children. From that moment forward, my definition of what my family would look like changed. My husband was an incredible support to me at this time, knowing that I was not in this alone. Both of our parents helped to emotionally support the two of us and were there for us every step of the way.

Not only did my definition of what my family would look like change but my view on life and what was important to me had significantly changed; I would no longer take special moments with my friends and family for granted and my views on what beauty is changed from hair and makeup to heart and character.

A couple weeks into my chemo I attended a Look Good, Feel Better program held by the ACS and met a wonderful friend who was in a similar situation as I was with nearly the same time frame. Connecting with someone who was going through the same things helped me tremendously. She is such a special person and I am so lucky to have her in my life. Also, having a wonderful and caring infusion nurse and care team helped get me through my weekly treatments. The chemo made my skin incredibly dry and the steroids made me break out a lot on my neck and back so I started to use coconut oil before I went to bed each night and my skin was like new after a couple days; I even think it helped my hair to start growing again!

Every day I try to remind myself how fortunate I am to have such supportive friends and family and that my situation could be in a worse; everyday there is someone in this world fighting the good fight for their lives. Life is beautiful and I am so grateful that I am able to continue to enjoy every day of mine with the people I love.
There are so many activities going on every month. This month the Joshua Hyde Library had a guest at the town common for the kids (and adults too, I loved it). The guest was Two-time Freestyle Frisbee Champion, Todd Brodeur! My kids loved it even my 12 year old son, who first thought it was just for little kids and stood next to a tree for the first 2 minutes before he realized it wasn't just for kids.

I didn't get to ask him all my fun questions because I didn't want to take away any time that he was spending with the kids who all had millions of questions for him. I did email him to see if he could answer a few questions for my project. I hope to be updating this soon!

If you want to find out about him visit his website http://www.toddbrodeur.com/ .

So here he is face 26.............. Todd Brodeur.

UPDATE!!!

What is the hardest Frisbee trick/move? They say the hardest Frisbee trick once you start playing and have been bitten by the bug, is to put the Frisbee down. I believe the sky is the limit, the hardest trick or move has not been invented yet. There are thousands of combinations of moves that have been done and new ways to combind them are always being thought up and attempted.

Do you have a favorite Frisbee? I do not have one favorite Frisbee. I like them all, as long as they fly well. I really like old Frisbees that have character. Ones with many srcatches and are well used. Every old Frisbee has a story, and has flown many thousands and sometimes millians of miles.

What is one thing that you would like to share about Frisbee tricks/moves that would help someone with no Frisbee skills (like me)? The one thing anyone can do to get better is get out and throw. The original instructions on the back of an old Frisbee say "Play catch, invent games. Flat flip flies straight, experiment." That is it in a nutshell, snap your wrist to put some good spin on it, use your imagination and have fun.OJW Studioshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13301838198353627109noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8505656596669746139.post-64871410315815835302010-07-01T10:51:00.003-05:002010-07-01T10:59:44.425-05:00meet Gloria face 25.....

While visiting Old Sturbridge Village, in Sturbridge, Massachusetts we met a wonderful lady named Gloria in the Asa Knight Store. Gloria, who has worked at OSV for 10 years, is one of the costumed historians. She taught us a lot about what people would buy at a general store in the 1830's.

When she found out my daughter was 4 year old she pointed out a tiny thimble and told us that back in the 1830's women would teach their 4 year old daughters how to sew. This way by the time they reached 11 they would be mending torn clothing and making their own clothing. She showed us all the hats that where in fashion back then and told us how they decorated the ladies hats with ribbons and flowers. Gloria also pointed out pocket knifes and informed us that the men would teach their sons how to widdle wood into things like clothes pins.

I asked her if she always works in the Asa Knight Store, since my kids and I make a visit every month to OSV I thought we would stop by and say hi to her in there again, but she said they are trained to work in all the buildings.

Thank you so much Gloria for sharing your wonderful knowledge on the 1830's and letting me use your photo and a bit about you for my 100 faces project.OJW Studioshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13301838198353627109noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8505656596669746139.post-15616183323359773742010-01-28T13:24:00.003-06:002010-01-28T13:42:02.906-06:00Meet face 24!

face24, originally uploaded by Olivia Williams Photography.

Never knew how different it would be to move to Massachusetts. I found out shortly after moving here that you can't just run into a Walmart or a Grocery store and get beer or liquor. You have to get it at either a gas station or a liquor store.
So lucky me I found New England's Largest Liquor store right down the road, Yankee Spirits! This is where I met face # 24 , my first New England face! Her name is Annette and she moved to Massachusetts from New Hampshire during the summer. She started working at the liquor store in November(the same time my family moved here). I didn't ask her as much as I should have, but I have to get back into the flow of asking questions for this. I did find out that she misses New Hampshire. Oh and the best part....she asked to see my ID.
OJW Studioshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13301838198353627109noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8505656596669746139.post-21523865388886267882009-05-18T10:54:00.003-05:002009-05-18T10:59:06.529-05:00Mr. Mugoo himself.....face 22

face22, originally uploaded by Olivia Williams Photography.

Meet Mr. Mugoo himself, aka Frank. This is Bob. When I told Bob he was going to be face 18, he said "I always wanted to be 18 again". I took out my little note book to write down a few things about him and I said, "your name is Bob right?" He said "yes, you spell it B O B". He just moved to Florida 4 months ago from "the land of cheese" also known as "behind the Cheddar curtain". He is retired, after 38 years of working on the rail road as a rail traffic controller. He is also the brother of one of my parent's friend, Al.

Thank you Bob for letting me take your photo for my 100 faces project. They didn't know what a florist was, so I took them to the one I knew they would love. Sherwood Florist. As soon as we pulled up they loved the building. We walked around inside for a few minutes I showed them some flower arrangements and we could see them making the arrangements behind the curtain. One of the ladies working there told us about the nursery in the back. The only nursery my kids know is a baby nursery. So I took them back there and that is where we met Ed, an employee for the Sherwood Florist Nursery for 20 years When I heard that I knew he would know the answer to a question that my 5 year old asked me a few days ago. "Why don't we have butterflies in our yard". So we asked Ed what plants attract butterflies. He took us around and pointed out so many plants. I don't remember all the names but I did take pictures of a few of them so I could remember the names. Here are some plants that attract butterflies: Shrimp Plant, Pentas, Porterweed, and the Lantana.

Thanks Ed for letting me take your photo for my 100 faces {telling stories} project and thank you for teaching my kids and myself about plants.
OJW Studioshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13301838198353627109noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8505656596669746139.post-86047091416087953202009-03-29T12:42:00.006-05:002009-03-29T13:08:41.913-05:00Face 16....Meet Tyson....

Face16, originally uploaded by Olivia Williams Photography.

While leaving Publix this afternoon my kids pointed out a fire truck pulling up into the parking lot. They started waving to the truck as it passed. My daughter wanted to get out of the shopping cart and look at the truck. So I put my groceries away and walked over to the fire truck. The firemen where just getting out of the truck and asked if my kids would like to see the truck. This is when I thought to myself , face 16!

So here is face 16.....meet Tyson. Tyson showed my kids inside the truck, and asked if my kids wanted to sit on the front for a picture. My normally talkative kids froze up with all the excitement and only my oldest stood in front of the truck.

A fireman for 6 years now, he was a paramedic for 10 years but switched jobs for the benefits and work. I then asked him if being a fireman is as exciting as little kids think. He said it is except for the 3 am wake up calls. Thank you for taking the time to talk to my kids, letting me take your portrait for my 100 faces project, and for being a fireman.
OJW Studioshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13301838198353627109noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8505656596669746139.post-84659196912719963872009-03-26T07:19:00.004-05:002009-03-26T07:28:11.853-05:00Meet Josh, face 15....

face15, originally uploaded by Olivia Williams Photography.

Jeff, face 14, had a friend out there skim boarding with him. I asked him, like I did his friend Jeff, what was one strange thing people don't know about him and he said "I can skim board on my belly without a board". Well today I saw the owner of the bike sitting on it and I had to just turn around and ask him if I could take his picture with the bike for my 100 faces {telling stories} project. At first he said I could just take a photo of the bike, but I explained my project and he got back on the bike and posed for a quick photo. His name is Frank and is a tattoo artist at Natural Art Tattoo in Spring Hill, Florida. He has been a tattoo artist for 8 years. While talking to him I told him how I love tattoos and that I was just too chicken to get one of my own, because of the pain. He told me that it isn't really painful, it is more annoying, like a sunburn that someone is rubbing and just when you want them to stop they do it again. Still don't think I will get a tattoo, but I love to photograph them.

Thank you Frank for letting me take your picture for my project.

OJW Studioshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13301838198353627109noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8505656596669746139.post-5705974393340297462009-03-09T08:03:00.007-05:002009-03-26T07:26:12.210-05:00Face Ten! Told me about his daughter and how she has a great eye for photography. While talking to Jim I learned that he moved to Florida back in 1980 and has lived in this area (Spring Hill) for 2 1/2 years. An interesting fact about him is that he was once a stunt double for Gene Hackman in a movie called The Gypsy Moths.

Thanks Jim for being face 10 of my 100 faces project!

The middle picture I took when I was leaving work for the night.
I can't believe I am already at face 10!
OJW Studioshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13301838198353627109noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8505656596669746139.post-53817235072699194102009-03-08T11:13:00.004-05:002009-03-26T07:25:32.697-05:00Face Nine, Meet Ruth....

face9, originally uploaded by Olivia Williams Photography.

First thing I asked Ruth was if I could take her picture and ask a few questions for my 100 faces project. Right after telling me this she added that it was 52 years ago yesterday (March 6). She has worked for Walmart for the last 6 years. I wanted to know if she still visits family or friends in new york. You will see why I wanted to switch them in a minute here.

I met Nikki while I was visiting my brother, she lives in the same apartment complex that they jokingly called their own "melrose place" When I told her she was face number seven she looked really excited because seven is her favorite number. I asked how long has she lived in Florida and what I found out was she moved here from Illinois seven years ago. The next thing I wanted to know was what she does for a living. Well she has been teaching music for seven years, two years of high school music and the last five years has been elementary music, which she added that a few weeks ago she had seven flute players but two just quit. So with all the sevens that kept popping up I just had to keep her at face number seven. Joann retired from Publix after 14 years, then recently started back up again at the new Publix near me.

Thank you so much Joann, you are helping me reach my goal of 100 faces.

I will be busy for the next few days so my next face should be posted after the weekend.
OJW Studioshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13301838198353627109noreply@blogger.com0
